King
Salmon (25 pounds and up)
Fly
rod :Bring at least a 9 weight
rod, a large capacity reel capable of holding
200 yards of backing with a solid disc drag system.
Bait
casting/level wind: You'll want a medium-heavy rod and a good
reel that has a bomb-proof drag. It should hold at least 200 yards
of 20 to 30 pound test. (I don't really recommend spinning gear
for kings - it can work, but line twist becomes a big problem.)
These
huge fish like the deepest fastest
part of the stream and can easily take all
the line off any reel. You'll need a lot of skill and
a little luck to put your hands on one.

Kings
are aggressive, but, like any fish, there are times when the
bite just isn't on. The runs are never huge in numbers (typically
20 to 30,000 fish make up a good run) but you can still
have some great days where you land 10 or 15 kings. Or
you can fish all day for just one. Luckily they are BIG and
just hooking one is enough to bring you back time after time
to fish for them. They are by far the most popular fish to
try for in Alaska even though statewide the average is 36
hours of fishing per fish caught!
