Arctic
Char / Dolly Varden (up to 19 pounds)
State Record - 19 pounds
Fly
rod: Most char are in the 1 to 5 pound range and
they are a lot of fun on a good 6 weight
but there are some big fish that will tear
up such "light" gear and wave goodbye.
Dollies
are fall spawners and make the transition from chrome-silver with
light pink spots to colorful fish with deep green backs, orange
bellies and fins and a pure white stripe on the leading edge of
the lower fins. Truly beautiful.
Your
reel must have a great drag
- smooth, reliable and capable of
stopping a train.
Spinning
Gear: A good light rod with a reel holding 150 to 200 yards
of 10 lb test is a good choice. We can tie on a lighter tippet
to get around fish that are line shy.
For
peak char fishing come anytime from mid August through the
end of September. Look for rivers that have great red runs
(like the Kenai and Alagnak) for those truly big fish.
